What are Social Stories?

Carol Gray, first defined Soical Stories in 1991 as a story which describes a situation, skill, or concept in terms of social cues, perspectives, and common responses in a secific style iand format.  The overall goal of a Social Story is to share accurate information in a reassuring manner that can be easily understood by it's target audience.  A Social Story describes a target behavior within a given situation, through which the individual's improved understanding of the events and expectations may lead to a more effective and appropriate response. (The Gray Center, 2011)

Social Stories were originally developed for children with ASD or Asperger's.  Currently there are limited social stories available to adults regarding everyday social situatioins that they may accounter.  Below we have developed social stories within the following areas: Family Social Situation, Errands, and Work Situations. The work situations, in particular, are of immense importance to those in the ASD community: Research indicates that 26% of people with Asperger's are jobless due to a lack of awareness of social etiquitte/ expectations and behaviors (Kowalski et al., 2007). Those who are cognizant of their weaknesses in the areas of social thinking and acceptable social behavior have been found to have higher salaries and more fulfilling jobs than those who are not (Kowalski et al., 2007). The stories included in the "Work Situations" section of this page, in particular, are meant to increase awareness of acceptable behaviors in the attempts to allow people with ASD more occupational opportunities.
